Crystal Burgoyne

Born in Boise, ID

Lives & works in Oregon & Colorado,

United States

Crystal Burgoyne is an artist who employs photography as a means for exploring issues of identity, place and social justice. She explores the use of Instagram as a medium for photography and words, as well as working in traditional print photography.  Many of the final artworks are photo encaustics.

Her most recent encaustic series is an exploration of the sense of self through self-portraiture. She deals with themes of censorship and digital privacy, institutionalized oppression, environmental and food justice, and motherhood. She also pursues opportunities to photograph demonstrations of activism in an attempt to understand what participating in democracy looks like.

Her day to day picture taking revolves around capturing details of the places she finds herself, resulting in a body of location-centric/street photography work primarily of Oregon, Idaho, and Colorado.  The work highlights details humans add to their environments that leave unique and telling storied about themselves.

Born in Boise, Idaho, Burgoyne moved to Oregon in 1997. She holds a degree in Environmental Studies from Willamette University and a Post-Baccalaureate of Craft in Fine Art Photography from Oregon College of Art and Craft. She maintains studios in Oregon and Colorado.
